The numbers might be down, but no one needs to apologize for the quality of the field at this weekend’s FLW Series, National Guard West event at Lake Havasu.

Led today by 3-time U.S. Open winner Mike Folkestad of Yorba Linda, the tournament field of 111 pros featured some of the finest anglers in the country including former Bassmaster Classic and FLW Tour Championship winners, plus B.A.S.S. Invitational, Stren Series, FLW Series, and four other former U.S. Open winners.

I talked to Mike earlier this evening and he was at his vintage, low-key best.

“It’s no secret,” he said. “I’m fishing bedding bass adjacent to spawning areas.” Specifically he’s relying on Folkestad Special Robos and brown and purple Open Water jigs.

“I don’t care if it blows or if it doesn’t,” he told me. “I’ve had three good days (17-7, 15-2 and 12-14).”

Compared to practice, however, Havasu is not what it was just a week ago. “Fishing has shut down with the wind,” he said. “Practice was awesome. I was getting 30 and 40 fish a day. The fish have backed off.”

Still he was unwilling to make any predictions. “You know how these things go,” he said. “I don’t want to jinx myself.”
